Choosing the right tie-down strap depends on what you're securing and how heavy it is. Check the break strength and working load limit listed for each strap—these numbers tell you how much weight the strap can safely handle. If you're moving motorcycles, ATVs, or heavy equipment, look for heavy-duty options with higher break strengths. For lighter loads, medium-duty or cam buckle straps may be enough. Always consider the length and width of the strap to make sure it fits your cargo and anchor points.

Some tie-down straps are designed for towing, but not all are suitable.

• Look for straps specifically labeled as tow or recovery straps.
• Check the break strength—tow straps often have much higher ratings, like 10,000 lbs.
• Make sure the strap has looped ends or reinforced hooks for secure attachment.

To use ratchet tie-downs safely:

1. Attach the hooks or loops to secure anchor points.
2. Thread the strap through the ratchet mechanism.
3. Pull the strap tight, then use the ratchet handle to further tighten.
4. Don't overtighten, as this can damage your cargo or the strap.
5. Double-check that the strap is flat and not twisted.

Ratchet straps use a ratcheting mechanism to tighten and secure loads, making them ideal for heavier cargo. Cam buckle straps rely on a spring-loaded buckle and are easier to adjust, but generally offer lower break strength.

• Ratchet straps: Great for motorcycles, ATVs, and heavy items.
• Cam buckle straps: Best for lighter loads and quick tie-downs.

Proper storage helps extend the life of your tie-down straps.

• Clean off any dirt or debris before storing.
• Let them dry completely if they got wet.
• Roll or fold the straps neatly to prevent tangling.
• Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
