Keeping water bugs out starts with a few simple steps:

• Seal entry points: Check for gaps around doors, windows, and pipes, and use caulk or weatherstripping to close them.
• Reduce moisture: Fix leaky faucets and pipes, and use a dehumidifier in damp areas like basements.
• Keep things clean: Regularly sweep and mop floors, and don’t leave food or crumbs out overnight.
• Use indoor barrier sprays: Consider using a household insect barrier spray as directed for added protection.

Combining these steps can help make your home less inviting to water bugs.

When using bug sprays in a home with pets, safety is key:

• Read the label: Always follow the product’s instructions and look for sprays labeled as pet safe.
• Keep pets away: Remove pets from the area while spraying and until the product has dried or settled, as recommended.
• Ventilate: Open windows or use fans to air out the space after application.
• Store products securely: Keep all sprays and tablets out of reach of pets when not in use.

Taking these steps can help minimize risks and keep your pets comfortable.

Many household bug control products are designed for both indoor and outdoor use. For outdoor areas like patios, lawns, or poolside, check the product label to confirm it’s suitable for exterior application. Some sprays and concentrates are formulated to create a barrier around your home’s foundation or in landscaping. Always follow the directions for outdoor use, and avoid applying before rain to help the treatment last longer. If you have pets or children, make sure the area is dry and ventilated before allowing them back outside.

The effectiveness of bug tablets and sprays can vary based on the product and environment. Many sprays offer protection for up to two weeks, while tablets may last several weeks in dry areas. Factors like humidity, cleaning routines, and the level of infestation can impact how long the treatment remains effective. For ongoing control, it’s a good idea to reapply or replace products as directed on the packaging. Always check the label for specific timing and safety instructions.

If water bugs return after treatment, try these steps:

• Reapply products: Follow the recommended schedule for sprays or tablets.
• Address moisture: Fix leaks and reduce standing water, as damp areas attract bugs.
• Deep clean: Clean behind appliances and in hidden spots where bugs may hide.
• Check for entry points: Seal cracks and gaps around your home’s exterior.

If the problem continues, you might consider consulting a pest control professional for further advice.
