A WAN cable connects your home or office network to a wider network, like the internet. It's typically used to link your router or modem to an external source, such as a satellite or fiber connection.

• WAN stands for Wide Area Network, which covers larger geographic areas than a LAN (Local Area Network).
• WAN cables are often Ethernet cables, but some setups may use specialized cables for satellite or fiber connections.
• Choosing the right WAN cable depends on your equipment and the type of internet service you have.

Understanding its role helps you set up reliable internet access.

LAN and WAN cables look similar but serve different purposes.

• LAN cables connect devices within your home or office, like computers, printers, and gaming consoles, to a local network.
• WAN cables connect your local network to the internet or an external network.
• Both are often Ethernet cables (like Cat6 or Cat8), but their use depends on where they're plugged in.

Knowing the difference helps you set up your network correctly and avoid confusion when connecting devices.

When setting up your network, it's important to plug your Ethernet cable into the correct port.

• LAN ports on your router connect devices like computers, TVs, or gaming consoles to your local network.
• WAN port connects your router to the internet source, such as a modem or satellite terminal.

If you're connecting to the internet, use the WAN port. For connecting devices within your home, use the LAN ports. Always check your router's labels to avoid mix-ups.

Most Ethernet cables can be used for WAN connections, but the type matters for speed and reliability.

• Common types include Cat5e, Cat6, Cat7, and Cat8, each supporting different speeds and bandwidths.
• For high-speed internet, newer cables like Cat6 or Cat8 are recommended.
• Some WAN setups, such as satellite systems, may require specialized cables.

It's a good idea to check your router or modem's requirements before choosing a cable for WAN use.

Choosing the right cable length depends on your setup and where your devices are located.

• Measure the distance between your router, modem, or satellite terminal and the device you want to connect.
• Allow extra length for routing around furniture or walls.
• Longer cables can introduce signal loss, so pick the shortest length that fits your needs.

Walmart offers a variety of cable lengths, making it easy to find one that suits your space and keeps your network tidy.
