It often depends on your group size, produce seasonality, and how much variety you want.

• DIY for larger groups: Buying veggies and assembling on a reusable divided tray can be more budget-friendly when you’re serving many people, especially with in-season produce.
• Pre-made for convenience: Ready-made trays tend to cost more per serving but save prep time and often include dips—helpful for small gatherings or last-minute plans.
• Think total cost: Factor in veggies, dips, and the tray itself. A lidded or chilled tray can support transport and freshness.

Comparing quantity and variety—not just the sticker—can help you decide, and the value of your time is part of the equation.

Pick veggies that bring color, crunch, and easy dipping.

• Great basics: Carrot sticks, celery, cucumber rounds, bell pepper strips, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, and radishes.
• Hearty florets: Broccoli and cauliflower hold up well in compartments and around a center dip.
• Nice add-ins: Jicama sticks, mini peppers, blanched green beans or asparagus, and sliced zucchini.

Prep tips:

• Rinse and dry thoroughly; moisture can make veggies soggy.
• Cut into bite-size pieces for easy grabbing.
• Consider briefly blanching and chilling sturdy veggies (like broccoli) for vibrant color and a tender-crisp bite.
• Keep watery items (like cucumbers) in separate sections to avoid pooling.

Timing varies by veggie and storage, but a little planning helps.

• Sturdier picks: Carrots, celery, and bell peppers are commonly prepped 1–2 days in advance and stored in a lidded tray or airtight containers.
• More delicate items: Cucumbers and tomatoes tend to be best cut closer to serving to reduce moisture and softening.
• Storage tips: Keep everything chilled, line compartments with paper towels to absorb excess moisture, and add dips just before serving.
• For chilled platters: If your tray uses ice, add or refresh the ice right before guests arrive.

Adjust based on your fridge, produce freshness, and how crisp you prefer the veggies.

A little layout and color planning goes a long way.

1. Choose the right base: Divided platters keep sections tidy; rotating trays make sharing easy; tiered stands add height.
2. Create a focal point: Place one or two dips in the center or in small bowls.
3. Color-block: Alternate greens, reds, oranges, and whites for contrast.
4. Vary shapes: Mix sticks, rounds, and florets; use small cups for thin items.
5. Layer thoughtfully: Keep taller items at the back and refill from a chilled backup.
6. Finish with garnish: Fresh herbs or lemon wedges add a fresh look.

These ideas can help elevate presentation without adding much prep time.

Consider guest count, table space, and how you’ll serve.

• Small trays (about 8–10 in or 4–5 sections): Handy for 2–4 people or add-on snacking.
• Medium trays (about 12–15 in or 5–6 sections): Often suited for small gatherings, roughly 6–10 guests depending on the rest of the menu.
• Large or multi-tiered: Useful for bigger groups or more variety.
• Feature options: Lids help with transport and storage; ice-chilled bases may help keep produce cool; rotating styles are great for shared tables.

These are general guidelines—appetites and side dishes can change what works best.
