Square Readers let you accept card payments by connecting to your phone, tablet, or Square Terminal. You simply plug in the reader, open the Square app, and swipe, tap, or insert a card. The device supports magstripe, chip, and contactless payments, depending on the model. Receipts can be sent digitally or printed if you use a terminal. This setup is popular for small businesses and mobile sellers because it’s easy to use and doesn’t require a traditional cash register.

Square doesn’t charge a monthly fee for basic use, but transaction fees apply for each payment processed. These fees are deducted automatically and cover card processing and security. There’s no charge for setting up the reader or app, but you’ll want to review Square’s fee structure to understand costs for your business.

• No monthly subscription required
• Transaction fees vary by payment type

While Square Readers are convenient, there are a few things to keep in mind.
