A spreader helps you apply granular products evenly across your yard or driveway. Instead of shaking by hand, it meters out seed, fertilizer, salt, ice melt, or topdressing for more consistent coverage.

• Broadcast spreaders: Use a spinning impeller to throw material in a wide pattern, great for larger areas.
• Drop spreaders: Release material straight down in a precise line, helpful near edges and garden beds.
• Handheld spreaders: Compact options for small lawns, spot treatments, and steps.
• Tow-behind spreaders: Hitch to a mower or ATV to cover big spaces efficiently.
• Battery-powered spreaders: Add powered feed for convenience on medium areas.

For best results, follow the product label, choose the right type, and adjust settings for the material you’re spreading.

Spreaders are versatile tools you can put to work in multiple seasons. With the right material and settings, one tool can support lawn care and winter prep.

• Spring: Apply starter fertilizer and grass seed to promote new growth.
• Summer: Distribute maintenance fertilizer or soil amendments where needed.
• Fall: Overseed thin spots and put down fall fertilizer for strong roots.
• Winter: Use salt or ice melt on driveways and walkways to help with traction.
• Topdressing: Some models (like compost/peat moss rollers) help spread lightweight organic material to improve soil.

Always match the spreader type and flow setting to the product, and consult the label for recommended application rates and timing.

Costs can vary based on size, construction, and features. Rather than focusing on a single price, consider what you need for your space and tasks.

• Type & capacity: Handheld models generally cost less than walk-behind or tow-behind units; larger hoppers and wider spread widths typically increase cost.
• Materials & durability: Heavier-duty frames, pneumatic tires, and weather-resistant parts can add value.
• Controls & convenience: Adjustable flow gates, multiple settings, hopper covers, and powered feeds influence price.
• Total ownership: Think about maintenance, parts availability, and storage.

Use filters to compare options by capacity and type, check customer ratings, and watch for savings events. Pickup or delivery options may be available for added convenience.

1. Measure your lawn: Know your square footage to avoid over- or under-applying.
2. Choose a spreader type: Broadcast for larger, open areas; drop for precise edges.
3. Set the flow: Use the product label’s setting as a starting point; test on a small area if possible.
4. Fill carefully: Load over a tarp or hard surface to catch spills, then sweep up.
5. Walk steadily: Start moving before opening the gate, overlap slightly, and maintain a consistent pace.
6. Mind hard surfaces: Sweep granules off sidewalks and driveways so they don’t wash into drains.
7. Water as directed: Follow label guidance for watering-in.
8. Clean up: Rinse and dry the spreader to help prevent corrosion.

These steps can help improve coverage and reduce waste, but always follow the product label.

1. Empty the hopper: Return unused material to its bag to prevent clumping.
2. Rinse thoroughly: Use low-pressure water to wash the hopper, impeller, and chute. Warm water can help dissolve salt or ice melt residue.
3. Dry completely: Wipe down and air-dry to reduce rust risk.
4. Lubricate moving parts: Lightly oil cables, gears, and the axle as recommended by the manual.
5. Inspect tires and fasteners: Check air pressure on pneumatic tires and tighten hardware.
6. Store indoors: Keep it in a dry place; cover if possible.
7. Recalibrate periodically: Verify settings after maintenance so application rates stay consistent.

Regular care can extend the life of broadcast, drop, handheld, and tow-behind spreaders.
