Using a spark plug tester is pretty straightforward. Here’s a simple guide:

1. Turn off your engine and let it cool down for safety.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.
3. Attach the tester between the spark plug and the wire.
4. Start the engine or have someone crank it.
5. Watch for a visible spark in the tester window. A strong spark usually means your ignition system is working well.

Always follow the instructions that come with your tester, and use safety gear like gloves and eye protection.

A flashing light on a spark tester usually indicates that the spark plug is firing. Here’s what to know:

• Consistent flashing: Suggests the ignition system is delivering power to the spark plug.
• No flashing: Could mean a faulty wire, plug, or ignition coil.
• Irregular flashing: Might point to intermittent issues in the ignition system.

Always check your vehicle’s manual and consult a professional if you’re unsure about the results.

Some inline spark testers let you check for spark without removing the spark plug. Here’s how it works:

• Connect the tester between the spark plug wire and the plug while it’s still installed.
• Crank the engine and look for a spark in the tester window.

This method can help you quickly spot ignition issues, but for a thorough check, removing the spark plug may give more detailed results.

If your spark plug tester isn’t showing a spark, several things could be happening:

• The spark plug wire or coil might be damaged.
• The spark plug could be worn out or fouled.
• The tester may not be connected properly.
• The battery or ignition system might have issues.

Double-check all connections and try testing another plug or wire. If you’re still not seeing a spark, it may be time to consult a mechanic.

Most spark plug testers are designed to work with a wide range of gasoline engines, including cars, motorcycles, and lawn mowers. However, it’s important to:

• Read the tester’s instructions to confirm compatibility with your engine type.
• Use the safety shield if provided, and wear protective gear.
• Never test on a running engine—always follow safety guidelines.

If you’re unsure, check your engine’s manual or ask a professional for advice.
