Spanner bits are designed for turning tamper-resistant screws, often found in electronics, appliances, and security fixtures. These bits have two prongs that fit into matching holes on the screw head, making them ideal for:

• Maintenance and repair: Opening devices or panels that require extra security.
• DIY projects: Assembling or disassembling items with spanner screws.
• Automotive work: Accessing certain components in vehicles.

They're a handy addition to any toolkit, especially if you work with products that use security fasteners.

Spanner bits are available in a range of sizes to fit different screw types. Common sizes are numbered, such as #4, #6, #8, #10, and #12, with the number referring to the distance between the two prongs. You’ll also find variations in length and shank type, like 1-inch or 2-inch bits, and 1/4-inch hex shanks for compatibility with most drills and drivers. It’s a good idea to check the screw head or your project’s requirements to choose the right size for the job.

In the US, the term "spanner" usually refers to a specific type of screwdriver bit with two prongs for tamper-resistant screws. However, "spanner" can also mean "wrench" in British English, which sometimes causes confusion. In American hardware stores, you'll most often see these bits labeled as "spanner bits," "security bits," or "snake-eye bits." If you’re shopping for tools, just look for "spanner bit" sets in the screwdriver or security bit section.

A spanner screw is easy to spot thanks to its unique head. It has two small, round holes opposite each other on the screw face. This design requires a matching spanner bit with two prongs to turn it. You’ll often find these screws in electronics, bathroom fixtures, or public installations where extra security is needed. If you see a screw head with two holes and no slot or cross, you’re likely looking at a spanner screw.

To choose the right spanner bit, start by checking the screw head for its size and shape. Match the distance between the holes on the screw with the prongs on your bit—most sets include multiple sizes. Consider the tool you’ll use; make sure the bit’s shank fits your screwdriver or drill. If you’re working with electronics or delicate items, opt for shorter bits for better control. For hard-to-reach spots, longer bits can be helpful. Having a set with various sizes gives you flexibility for different projects.
