When it comes to kids’ toys, sensory refers to products designed to engage one or more of the five senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste. Sensory toys often feature different textures, colors, or interactive elements that encourage children to explore and learn through play. These toys can help support development by offering calming, hands-on experiences and can be especially helpful for kids who benefit from extra sensory input. Many sensory toys are also screen-free, making them a great choice for creative, active play.

Absolutely! A classic example of a sensory toy is a sensory bin. These bins are filled with materials like sand, small toys, or textured objects that kids can scoop, pour, and explore with their hands. Other examples include fidget toys, squishy stress balls, and activity boards with different textures and moving parts. Each of these toys is designed to stimulate the senses and encourage hands-on learning, making playtime both fun and beneficial for development.

The five sensory feelings, also known as the five senses, are:

• Touch – feeling textures, temperatures, and pressure
• Sight – seeing colors, shapes, and movement
• Sound – hearing different noises and tones
• Smell – detecting scents and odors
• Taste – experiencing flavors

Many sensory toys focus on touch and sight, but some also include sound or even scent to create a more engaging play experience for kids.

Sensory toys can be helpful for people who seek extra sensory input or need calming activities. For some children, especially those with sensory processing differences, these toys offer a safe way to explore textures, sounds, or movement. Sensory toys can also support focus, stress relief, and fine motor skills. While everyone can enjoy sensory play, some individuals may find these toys especially beneficial for self-regulation and relaxation during daily routines.

Choosing the right sensory toy depends on the child’s interests and needs. Here are a few tips:

• Consider which senses you want to engage—touch, sight, or sound.
• Look for age-appropriate options with safe, durable materials.
• Think about portability if you want a toy for on-the-go use.
• Check for easy-to-clean designs, especially for messy play.

Exploring different types of sensory toys can help you find the best fit for your child’s play style and developmental stage.
