The Scotts Step Program is designed to simplify lawn care by breaking it down into four seasonal steps. Each step targets specific lawn needs, from preventing crabgrass in early spring to feeding and strengthening your lawn for winter.

• Step 1: Apply in early spring to prevent crabgrass.
• Step 2: Use in late spring to tackle weeds and feed your lawn.
• Step 3: Summer application helps protect against heat and drought.
• Step 4: Fall feeding prepares your lawn for colder weather.

Following the steps can help maintain a healthy, green lawn throughout the year.

Step 1 is best applied in early spring, just as your lawn starts to green up but before crabgrass begins to germinate. Timing can vary depending on your region, but generally, you want to apply it when soil temperatures reach about 55°F.

• Check local weather forecasts for guidance.
• Look for signs of early grass growth as a cue.

Applying Step 1 at the right time can help prevent crabgrass and set the stage for a healthier lawn.

The Scotts Step Program is formulated for most common lawn grasses, but it's important to check the product label for compatibility with your specific grass type.

• Some products are designed for cool-season grasses, while others suit warm-season varieties.
• Always read instructions to ensure safe and effective use.

If your lawn has a unique grass type or mix, reviewing the packaging can help you choose the right formula for your needs.

Most products in the Scotts Step Program are granular and can be applied using a standard broadcast or drop spreader.

• Spreaders help ensure even coverage and reduce waste.
• Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for spreader settings.

If you don't own a spreader, many retailers offer them for purchase or rental. Using the right equipment can make application easier and more effective.

Light rain after applying Scotts Step Program products can actually help activate the ingredients and move them into the soil.

• If heavy rain occurs, some product may wash away, reducing effectiveness.
• Check the product instructions for specific guidance on watering and weather conditions.

If you're concerned about runoff, you may want to reapply according to the package directions. Monitoring weather forecasts before application can help maximize results.
