Choosing the right size hideaway for your rat depends on a few things:

• Number of rats: If you have more than one, look for a hideout with enough space for all to fit comfortably.
• Cage size: Make sure the hideaway fits inside your cage without taking up all the floor space.
• Rat size: Some rats prefer cozy, snug spaces, while others like a bit more room to stretch out.

Check product dimensions and compare them to your cage and your rats' needs for the best fit.

Rat hideaways come in a variety of materials, each with its own benefits:

• Wood: Offers a natural look and is great for chewing, but check for untreated, pet-safe wood.
• Plastic: Easy to clean and lightweight, but make sure it's sturdy and free from sharp edges.
• Fabric or fleece: Soft and cozy, ideal for warmth and comfort, but may need frequent washing.
• Ceramic: Durable and cool, helpful in warmer climates.

Consider your rat's habits and your cleaning routine when choosing a material.

Keeping your rat's hideaway clean helps maintain a healthy environment. Here are some general tips:

• Remove bedding and debris from the hideaway regularly.
• Wash plastic and ceramic hideouts with warm, soapy water, then rinse thoroughly and dry before returning to the cage.
• For wooden hideaways, wipe with a damp cloth and let air dry completely. Avoid soaking wood to prevent warping.
• Fabric or fleece hideouts can usually be machine washed—check the care label first.

Clean at least once a week, or more often if needed.

Many rat hideaways are designed to be versatile and can work for other small animals like hamsters, gerbils, mice, guinea pigs, and even small rabbits or ferrets. Always check the product description for size and suitability. Make sure the entry holes and interior space fit your pet comfortably and safely. If you have multiple species, consider their specific needs for privacy, chewing, and bedding preferences before sharing hideaways.

Placement can make a big difference for your rat's comfort. Try these tips:

• Choose a quiet corner of the cage to give your rat a sense of security.
• Avoid blocking food or water areas to keep everything accessible.
• Mix up locations occasionally to encourage exploration and enrichment.
• Keep the hideaway away from direct sunlight or drafts to maintain a comfortable temperature inside.

Observe your rat's behavior and adjust placement as needed for their comfort.
