Choosing a rain gauge depends on your yard size, style preferences, and how you plan to use it.

• Capacity: Larger gauges can measure more rainfall before needing to be emptied.
• Material: Options include glass, plastic, and metal—plastic is lightweight and weather-resistant, while glass offers clear readings.
• Readability: Look for large numbers or magnified designs if you want easy reading from a distance.
• Mounting: Some come with stakes for ground installation, while others can be mounted on posts or fences.

Consider where you'll place it and how visible you want it to be for the best fit.

For the most accurate measurements, place your rain gauge in an open area away from trees, buildings, or fences that could block rainfall or cause splashing.

• Install it on level ground to avoid runoff skewing results.
• Make sure it's upright and stable, using a stake or holder if needed.
• Position it at least a few feet from large objects to prevent wind interference.

Regularly check that nothing is obstructing the opening, so you get the best possible readings.

Keeping your rain gauge clean helps maintain accurate readings.

1. Empty any remaining water after each rainfall.
2. Rinse the inside with clean water to remove debris or dirt.
3. For stubborn buildup, use a soft brush and mild soap—avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the material.
4. Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry before putting it back outside.

Regular cleaning, especially during pollen season or after heavy storms, can help your gauge last longer and stay reliable.

Many rain gauges are designed for year-round outdoor use, but it's a good idea to check if your model is freeze-proof or weather-resistant.

• Plastic and heavy-duty models often handle cold and wet conditions well.
• Glass gauges may need extra care in freezing temperatures to prevent cracking—consider bringing them indoors during harsh winter weather.
• Always check the manufacturer's care instructions for best results.

With proper placement and care, most rain gauges can be used in all seasons to track rainfall.

Replacement tubes and parts are available for many rain gauge models, especially those with removable measuring tubes.

• Check the product description or packaging for compatibility information.
• Some sets include extra tubes, while others may offer them separately.
• It's helpful to keep your original model number handy when searching for parts.
