Most time clocks record when employees start and end work, but they do it in different ways:

• Punch card clocks: Employees insert a paper time card. The machine auto-aligns the card (on many models) and prints the time and date using an ink ribbon. Some units support multiple punches per day, several time zones, and automatic daylight saving adjustments.
• Biometric/PIN/face clocks: Employees verify identity with a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN. Times are stored digitally and can often be exported via USB. Some options operate without monthly fees.

Configurations vary by model and company policies. Reviewing the product’s specs and your payroll process can help you pick a setup that fits your workflow.

“Punching the clock” simply means recording your work time. Depending on the system, that could be:

• Stamping a card: Inserting a paper time card so the device prints the time and date.
• Digital check-in: Using a fingerprint, face scan, or a PIN to log in and out.

These records help track attendance and calculate hours for payroll. Some workplaces also track breaks or job codes. Policies on rounding or edits can vary, so it’s a good idea to follow your employer’s guidelines. If you’re choosing a clock, think about how your team prefers to clock in and how you’ll pull reports.

You’ll see a few main styles, each suited to different needs:

• Punch card time clocks: Print timestamps on paper cards; straightforward and low-tech.
• Calculating/auto-totaling clocks: Stamp or record punches and help total hours for easier review.
• Document stamps: Time/date stamp forms or documents for recordkeeping.
• Biometric fingerprint clocks: Help verify identity and reduce buddy punching.
• Face recognition terminals: Hands-free verification with on-device logs.
• PIN/password clocks: Simple electronic check-ins without biometrics.
• Access control combos: Some units pair attendance with door access functions.

Pricing typically reflects features and long-term needs rather than just the hardware. Consider:

• Technology: Basic punch card models are generally simpler; biometric and face systems add verification features.
• Capacity and speed: Support for more employees or faster processing can influence cost.
• Data handling: USB export, offline/online capability, and reporting features vary by model.
• Included items: Bundles with time cards, ink ribbons, keys, or card racks can add value.
• Durability and power: Build quality, wall-mount options, and power outage backup may matter.
• Convenience: Auto-align, auto-totaling, multiple punches per day, and daylight saving adjustments.

You can find time cards, ink ribbons, and other supplies in our time clocks & cards section. To pick the right replacements:

• Match compatibility: Check your clock’s model and card style (print positions, alignment marks) and select compatible cards and ribbons.
• Review ribbon details: Note color, yield, and whether a cartridge or spool is required.
• Consider quantity: Multi-packs can reduce restocking frequency for busy teams.
• Check accessories: Card racks, security keys, and document stamp supplies are often available.

Availability can vary, so reviewing your manual and the item description can help ensure a proper fit. Keeping a spare ribbon and extra cards on hand can help minimize downtime.
