Choosing the right pruning snips depends on what you plan to trim and your comfort preferences.

• Blade type: Bypass blades are great for live, green stems, while anvil blades work well on dry or woody branches.
• Handle size and grip: Look for ergonomic, non-slip handles if you’ll be pruning for long periods.
• Cutting capacity: Check the maximum branch thickness the snips can handle, usually listed in inches.
• Maintenance: Stainless steel or non-stick blades are easier to clean and resist rust.

Trying out different styles in-store can also help you find the best fit for your hand.

Keeping your pruning snips clean helps them last longer and work better.

1. Wipe off sap and debris after each use with a damp cloth.
2. For sticky residue, use a little soapy water or rubbing alcohol.
3. Dry the blades thoroughly to prevent rust.
4. Apply a light oil to the pivot and blades to keep them moving smoothly.

Regular cleaning can also help prevent the spread of plant diseases between cuts.

Pruning snips are designed for smaller stems and branches, usually up to about 3/4 inch thick.

• For thicker branches, consider using loppers or a pruning saw for better leverage and safety.
• Using snips on branches that are too thick can damage the tool and make cutting harder.

Always check the product’s cutting capacity before tackling larger jobs.

Sharp blades make pruning easier and cleaner.

• Use a sharpening stone or a specialized tool to gently hone the blade edge, following the original angle.
• Clean the blades before sharpening to remove any sap or dirt.
• After sharpening, wipe the blades and apply a little oil to prevent rust.

Regular maintenance can help your snips stay in top shape for many seasons.

Some pruning snips offer replacement parts like springs or blades, but availability varies by brand and model.

• Check the product packaging or manufacturer’s website for details on replacement parts.
• Walmart’s customer service can also help you find compatible parts or suggest alternatives if needed.

Keeping your snips in good repair can extend their useful life and save you money over time.
