Poster borders are simple add-ons that help your display look finished and easier to read. They can:

• Frame and focus: Create a clean edge that draws the eye to your message.
• Add contrast and color: Bright or themed trims make content pop from a distance.
• Organize space: Separate sections, titles, and side notes for a cleaner layout.
• Cover rough edges: Hide uneven cuts or gaps around a poster or bulletin board.
• Set a theme: Seasonal, metallic, wood-look, or pattern trims help match classrooms, offices, or events.

You can use borders alone or pair them with a background roll for a cohesive, layered look. Results vary based on colors, lighting, and viewing distance.

It depends on poster size and how far people will view it from.

• Most classroom/poster use: Borders around 2–2.5 inches wide are a common, balanced choice.
• Smaller prints (letter/tabloid): Try 1–1.5 inches so the trim doesn’t overpower your content.
• Larger boards or hallways: A wider 3-inch look can read better from across the room.
• Layering: Stacking two trims (e.g., a solid behind a scalloped) adds depth without going overly wide.

Many rolled borders are around 2.25 inches wide, which suits most displays. Consider your font size and wall distance, and test a short strip first. Preferences vary by style and space.

You’ll see a few common terms that all refer to decorative edging for displays:

• Border trim / border: General names for decorative edging around posters and bulletin boards.
• Bulletin board border: Often sold in rolls or strips for classrooms and offices.
• Rolled border / trimmer: Continuous rolls you cut to size; easy for long runs.
• Scalloped trim: Wavy edge for a softer, playful look.
• Straight-edge trim: Clean, modern lines that suit minimal layouts.
• Corrugated or metallic border: Textured or shiny styles for extra dimension.

Note: “Background rolls” are different—those are large sheets that cover the board behind your poster.

This page focuses on physical poster and bulletin board borders (rolled and pre-cut), rather than downloadable templates. If you’d like a template look without printing, you can:

1. Use pre-cut trims: Choose scalloped or straight styles for quick, consistent edges.
2. Cut from background rolls: Slice long strips to create custom-width borders.
3. DIY a guide: Trace a ruler or plate onto cardstock to make your own cutting guide, then reuse it.

These approaches can help you achieve a templated appearance while keeping materials consistent with your display. Results may vary based on tools and paper weight.

Coverage depends on your poster’s perimeter and the roll length. Here’s a quick way to estimate:

1. Measure perimeter: Add all four sides (e.g., 24" × 36" poster = 24+24+36+36 = 120" ≈ 10 feet).
2. Check roll length: Common options include about 36 feet, 50 feet, or 25 feet.
3. Estimate pieces: A 36-foot roll can frame roughly three 24" × 36" posters (allowing a little extra for corners and overlaps). A 50-foot roll typically covers more; a 25-foot roll covers fewer.

If you plan to layer trims or miter corners, budget a bit more. Cutting a test strip first can help refine your estimate.
