Common names for a plastic strainer vary by design and use.

• Plastic colander: A perforated bowl for draining pasta and rinsing produce.
• Mesh strainer/sieve: A plastic frame with nylon or fine mesh for liquids and small grains.
• Berry colander: A small colander sized for berries or herbs.
• Rice washer/strainer bowl: A bowl with integrated drainage for washing rice, beans, or peas.
• Clip-on pot drainer: A handheld or clip-on piece for pouring off water.
• Double-layer rinsing basket: A nested bowl-and-strainer set for soak-and-drain tasks.
• Collapsible colander: A space-saving, fold-flat colander.

Product titles on our site may use these terms interchangeably. Checking photos and dimensions can help match the tool to your task.

If you’re without a plastic strainer, a few kitchen stand-ins can help in a pinch.

• Pot lid method: Hold the lid slightly ajar to pour off water for pasta or veggies. Use oven mitts and pour away from you.
• Slotted spoon or tongs: Scoop larger foods like pasta shapes or vegetables.
• Steamer basket: Lift foods out of the pot to drain.
• Perforated skimmer: A wide, holed spoon works for dumplings or gnocchi.
• Clean fine-mesh bag or cloth: Line a bowl to strain stocks or rinse small grains.

These options can work temporarily, but capacity, mesh size, and heat handling vary. For frequent draining and rinsing, a dedicated plastic colander or nylon mesh strainer is usually more convenient.

A plastic strainer is a lightweight kitchen tool designed to separate liquids from solids or rinse foods.

• Colanders: Perforated plastic bowls for draining pasta and washing fruits or vegetables.
• Nylon mesh strainers/sieves: Plastic frames with fine mesh for kefir, tea, sauces, or small grains.
• Double-layer bowl sets: A strainer nested in a bowl for soak-and-drain tasks.
• Specialty pieces: Berry colanders, rice washer bowls, and collapsible models for easy storage.

Benefits often include being rust-free, gentle on cookware, and easy to carry. As with any plastic tool, avoid direct contact with stovetop heat and check product details for temperature limits and care instructions. Many models are described as dishwasher-friendly on the product page.

Both materials have strengths, so it depends on what you’re making and how you work.

• Choose plastic when: You want a lightweight, non-scratch colander for rinsing produce or draining pasta; you prefer options like collapsible designs or double-layer bowl sets; or you need a nylon mesh strainer for finer tasks.
• Choose metal when: You need higher heat tolerance and extra rigidity, such as draining very hot or heavy foods. Metal mesh can be durable for frequent, high-heat use.

For everyday rinsing and most pasta, plastic colanders are a practical pick. For tasks near high heat, review each item’s temperature guidance—plastic pieces vary. Checking capacity, mesh fineness, handle style, and storage needs on the product page can help you decide. Pairing one colander with a fine-mesh strainer covers most kitchens.

Capacity and task are the best guides when choosing a size.

• 1–2 quart mini colanders/mesh strainers: Great for berries, herbs, or small rinses.
• 3–4 quart everyday colanders: Versatile for most pasta shapes and produce.
• 5 quart and larger: Helpful for big batches or family meals.
• Fine-mesh sizes (3–7 inches): Ideal for tea, kefir, sauces, or small grains.

Also consider sink space and storage. Over-the-sink styles free up hands, while collapsible colanders save cabinet room. If you rinse rice or beans often, look for fine holes or nylon mesh to reduce loss. Checking product dimensions and capacity on the item page can help you pick a size that fits your pots, sink, and usual portions.
