Today, pipe cleaners are often called chenille stems or fuzzy sticks in the crafting world. These names reflect their soft, plush texture and flexible wire core, making them perfect for all sorts of creative projects. You'll find them in a variety of colors, lengths, and thicknesses, so they're great for everything from kids' crafts to detailed DIY decorations. If you're shopping online or in stores, searching for "chenille stems" or "fuzzy sticks" will help you find the same versatile crafting supplies as traditional pipe cleaners.

The best pipe cleaner for crafts depends on your project. Here are some tips to help you choose:

• Standard chenille stems (about 6mm thick, 12 inches long) are great for most arts and crafts, offering flexibility and a soft texture.
• Thicker or extra-fluffy pipe cleaners add volume to projects like plush animals or flowers.
• Hard bristle pipe cleaners are stiffer and can help with structure but are less common for crafts.

For most creative projects, multi-colored, flexible chenille stems are a popular choice. Consider your design and pick the size and color that fits your vision.

If you’re out of pipe cleaners, you can get creative with a few alternatives:

• Twist ties from bread bags or produce can work for small projects.
• Wire (floral or craft wire) is flexible and holds shapes well, though it’s not fuzzy.
• Yarn or string can be twisted around wire to mimic the look and feel of pipe cleaners.

These substitutes can help you finish your craft, but keep in mind they might not have the same texture or color variety as traditional chenille stems.

Pipe cleaners are a popular choice for kids’ crafts because they’re flexible, colorful, and easy to shape. However, it’s important to supervise young children, as the wire inside can have sharp ends if cut. For added safety:

• Choose chenille stems with capped or folded ends.
• Help kids with cutting or shaping as needed.
• Keep small pieces away from children under 3 years old to prevent choking hazards.

With a little guidance, pipe cleaners can be a safe and fun addition to creative activities.
