Connecting a USB optical mouse is simple. Just plug the USB receiver or cable into an available USB port on your computer or laptop. Most devices will automatically recognize the mouse and install any necessary drivers. If your mouse has extra features, like adjustable DPI or programmable buttons, you may want to check for optional software downloads from the manufacturer. No batteries are needed for wired models, while wireless mice may require charging or battery replacement. Once connected, you can start using your mouse right away.

Optical mice work best on flat, non-reflective surfaces. While many models can handle a variety of surfaces, including mouse pads, desks, and even glass (if specified), highly glossy or uneven surfaces may affect tracking accuracy.

• For optimal performance, use a mouse pad or a smooth desk.
• Some advanced mice are designed to work on glass, but check the product details to confirm.

DPI stands for "dots per inch" and measures how sensitive your mouse is to movement. Higher DPI means the cursor moves faster across the screen with less physical movement. Many optical mice let you adjust DPI settings to match your needs—lower DPI for precise tasks like editing, higher DPI for fast-paced gaming or general use.

• Check your mouse's manual or software for DPI adjustment options.

Keeping your optical mouse clean helps maintain its performance.

1. Unplug or turn off the mouse before cleaning.
2. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior.
3. For stubborn dirt, lightly dampen the cloth with water (avoid harsh chemicals).
4. Clean around the sensor area gently to prevent dust buildup.

Many optical mice feature ambidextrous designs, making them comfortable for both left- and right-handed users.

• Look for models labeled as "ambidextrous" or with symmetrical shapes.
• Some mice offer customizable button layouts to suit your preference.
