OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostics. It's a system built into most vehicles since 1996 that monitors your car’s performance and emissions. When something isn’t working right—like engine or emissions issues—the OBD system stores error codes that can be read with a scan tool. This helps you or your mechanic quickly pinpoint problems, saving time and often money. OBD scanners plug into a port under your dashboard and let you access these codes, making car maintenance easier and more transparent.

Most Audi vehicles made after 1996 are OBD2 compliant, which means you can use OBD2 scanners to read and clear error codes, check engine light issues, and monitor performance. Just make sure your scanner supports OBD2 protocols and is compatible with your Audi’s model year. Some advanced features may require specialized tools, but for basic diagnostics, an OBD2 scanner is a handy way to keep tabs on your Audi’s health.

FORScan is a diagnostic software mainly used for Ford, Lincoln, Mazda, and Mercury vehicles. To use FORScan, you’ll need an OBD2 scanner that supports the required communication protocols, like ELM327-based adapters (wired or Bluetooth). Check the scanner’s compatibility with FORScan before purchasing. Many users prefer Bluetooth or USB adapters for easy connection to laptops or smartphones, but always verify your vehicle and device compatibility for the best experience.

Most OBD2 scanners draw minimal power when plugged in, but leaving them connected for extended periods—especially when the car is off—can slowly drain your battery. To avoid this, unplug the scanner when you’re done using it. Some newer scanners have built-in power-saving features, but it’s always a good idea to check your device’s instructions and keep your battery healthy by disconnecting tools when not in use.

• Find your car’s OBD2 port, usually located under the dashboard near the steering wheel.
• Plug the scanner into the port securely.
• Turn your car’s ignition to the ON position (engine off or running, depending on the scanner).
• Follow the scanner’s instructions to start reading codes or diagnostics.

Some scanners connect via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, so you may need to pair them with your smartphone or tablet. Always consult your scanner’s manual for specific steps and safety tips.
