Mechanical pencil refills are called "lead" due to tradition, but they're actually made of graphite, not real lead. The term dates back to when early pencils used a material called "plumbago," which was mistaken for lead. Today, all modern pencil refills use graphite mixed with clay for strength and smooth writing. So, when you see "lead refills," you can be confident they're safe and contain no actual lead metal—just the reliable graphite core you need for writing or drawing.

The main difference between HB and 2B lead refills is their hardness and darkness.

• HB lead is a balanced option—it's medium in hardness and produces a standard, medium-dark line. It's great for everyday writing and general use.
• 2B lead is softer and makes darker, bolder lines. This type is often preferred for sketching, shading, or when you want your writing to stand out more.

Choosing between 0.7mm and 0.5mm lead refills depends on your writing style and needs.

• 0.7mm lead is slightly thicker, making it less likely to break and ideal for bold, everyday writing or note-taking.
• 0.5mm lead is finer, which is great for detailed work, neat handwriting, or when you want to fit more on a page.

Refilling a mechanical pencil is simple and quick.

1. First, remove the eraser or end cap from your pencil—this is usually where the refill chamber is.
2. Insert one or two new lead refills into the chamber (don’t overfill).
3. Replace the eraser or cap, then click the pencil a few times to advance the new lead into position.

Colored lead refills can add a fun twist to your writing or drawing, but it’s important to match the lead size to your mechanical pencil. Most colored leads are available in common sizes like 0.7mm or 0.5mm. Before inserting, check your pencil’s barrel or packaging for the correct size. Using the wrong size may cause jams or not fit properly. Colored leads are great for organizing notes, art projects, or highlighting, as long as they’re compatible with your pencil.
