A car diagnostic scanner helps you quickly identify issues with your vehicle by reading error codes from its onboard computer. With advanced models, you can:

• Check engine, transmission, and other system faults
• Perform resets for services like oil changes or brake pads
• Run bidirectional tests to activate components
• Access detailed reports for troubleshooting

Using a scanner can save time at the repair shop and give you more control over your car's maintenance.

Most scan tools connect to your car via the OBD2 port, usually found under the dashboard. To connect:

1. Locate the OBD2 port in your vehicle
2. Plug in the scanner securely
3. Turn the ignition to 'on' (engine off or running, as required)
4. Follow the scanner's prompts on its touchscreen or app

Always check your vehicle manual for port location and compatibility before connecting.

Many diagnostic scan tools support a wide range of car brands and models, but compatibility can vary. Here’s what to look for:

• Check the product description for supported brands and years
• Look for features like CANFD, DoIP, and FCA AutoAuth for newer vehicles
• Some scanners offer updates to expand coverage

If you’re unsure, review the scanner’s specs or ask a Walmart associate for help matching your vehicle.

Basic scan tools typically read and clear error codes, while advanced models offer more features. Advanced scan tools may provide:

• Bidirectional control for testing parts
• ECU coding and online updates
• Service resets (oil, brakes, etc.)
• Detailed system diagnostics and topology mapping

Consider your needs—DIYers may prefer basic tools, while professionals benefit from advanced options.

Updating your scanner keeps it compatible with new vehicles and features. To update:

1. Connect the scanner to WiFi or a computer, as instructed
2. Access the update menu on the device
3. Download and install available updates
4. Restart the scanner if prompted

Many scanners offer free updates for a set period, so check your product details for specifics.
