Many traditional lanterns are designed to use kerosene as fuel, but it's important to always check your lantern's manual or labeling before filling it. Using the correct fuel helps ensure safe operation and optimal performance. If your lantern specifically calls for kerosene, make sure to use clean-burning kerosene intended for indoor or outdoor use. Never substitute with other fuels unless the manufacturer states they're compatible, as this could lead to safety risks or damage to your lantern.

Lantern oil and kerosene are often used for similar purposes, but they're not always the same. Lantern oil is a term that can refer to a variety of fuels, including refined kerosene or specially formulated oils designed to burn cleaner and with less odor. Some lantern oils are made for indoor use and may include additives to reduce smoke or scent. Always check your lantern's instructions to see which fuel types are compatible, and never mix fuels or use unapproved substitutes for safety reasons.

Camping lanterns can use several types of fuel, depending on their design. Common options include:

• Propane – Convenient and widely available in small cylinders.
• Butane – Often used in compact, portable lanterns.
• Kerosene – Used in some traditional or larger lanterns.

Always use the fuel type specified by your lantern's manufacturer. Using the wrong fuel can be unsafe and may damage your equipment. Never attempt to refill with a different type of fuel unless the product instructions confirm it's safe to do so.

If you run out of your lantern's recommended fuel, the safest option is to wait until you can purchase the correct type. Using alternative fuels not specified by the manufacturer can be dangerous, potentially causing fires, toxic fumes, or equipment damage. For your safety, avoid experimenting with household liquids or other fuels not intended for lantern use. Always read your lantern's manual for approved fuel types and follow all safety guidelines.

Proper storage of lantern fuel helps keep your home and campsite safe. Here are some tips:

• Store fuel in its original, clearly labeled container.
• Keep containers tightly sealed and away from heat sources, open flames, or direct sunlight.
• Place fuel out of reach of children and pets.
• Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, following any local regulations for fuel storage.

Always follow the storage instructions on the fuel container and never transfer fuel to unmarked or inappropriate containers.
