To laminate means to cover an item—like a document, photo, or card—with clear plastic film to help protect it from wear. You can do this in a couple of ways:

• Thermal pouches + laminator: Heat bonds the pouch’s layers around your item.
• Self-adhesive (cold) sheets: No machine needed; you peel and stick.
• Adhesive laminate rolls: Larger, single-sided film that covers surfaces and projects.

Lamination can help resist smudges, light moisture, and frequent handling, and many options wipe clean. Common sizes here include letter (8.5 x 11 inches), 4 x 6 photos, wallet sizes, and 11 x 17. Features vary by product, so it’s a good idea to review the item details.

Here’s a simple, general overview. Always follow the directions that come with your specific product:

• Thermal method: (1) Pick the right pouch size and thickness (e.g., 3 mil or 5 mil). (2) Preheat the laminator. (3) Place your item fully inside the pouch, aligned. (4) Feed the sealed edge into the machine. (5) Let it cool flat before trimming, keeping a small border for the seal.
• Self-adhesive (cold) method: (1) Choose a sheet sized for your item. (2) Peel back a small section of the liner. (3) Align and stick slowly, smoothing out bubbles as you go. (4) Press firmly. (5) Trim if desired, as product instructions allow.

On this page, “laminate” usually refers to the clear plastic materials used to protect items, not just the machine. You’ll see:

• Laminating pouches: Clear, two-sided sleeves used with a laminator (thermal).
• Self-adhesive sheets: No-heat, peel-and-stick film for documents and photos.
• Adhesive laminate rolls/shelf liner: Larger, single-sided film to cover surfaces, books, or craft projects.

There are also laminators (the machines) that work with thermal pouches. When choosing laminate, consider size (from wallet to 11 x 17), thickness (e.g., 3 mil vs. 5 mil), and finish (many are clear and glossy). Check the product page for specific features and compatibility.

A laminated photo is a print that’s sealed under clear plastic to help protect it during handling and display. You can use:

• Thermal pouches: Heat seals the photo inside; common sizes include 4 x 6, 5 x 7, and wallet.
• Self-adhesive sheets: Peel-and-stick, no heat—useful if you prefer a no-machine option.

Look for features such as clear, glossy film and photo-friendly or acid-free materials where noted. For best results, ensure the photo is clean and flat, and leave a small border to maintain the seal when trimming. If you’re concerned about irreplaceable originals, you might test with a copy first, as outcomes can vary by product and technique.

Both work well, but they feel different and suit different needs:

• 3 mil: Thinner and more flexible. Helpful for standard documents, signs, or items you may bend or insert into sleeves and binders.
• 5 mil: Thicker and stiffer. Useful when you want extra durability—think menus, reference sheets, ID cards, or items handled often.

Consider how frequently the item will be used and whether you prefer flexibility or rigidity. Also check your laminator’s specifications to confirm it supports the pouch thickness you choose. Results can vary based on your machine, the pouch, and the item you’re laminating, so reviewing product details is a good next step.
