Changing a kendama string is pretty simple and can help keep your game smooth. Here’s a quick guide:

1. Remove the old string by untying or cutting it from the kendama.
2. Thread the new string through the hole in the ken (handle) and then through the tama (ball).
3. Tie a secure knot at each end to keep everything in place.
4. Make sure the string isn’t too tight or too loose—adjust as needed for your preferred play style.

Taking your time with each step can help prevent tangles and keep your kendama ready for action.

The ideal kendama string length depends on your play style and comfort. Most players start with a string that’s about the length of the ken (handle) plus a few extra inches. Some prefer longer strings for advanced tricks, while others like shorter ones for more control. If you’re unsure, try experimenting with different lengths to see what feels best. Replacement strings often come extra long, so you can trim them to your liking before tying the final knot.

While you might be tempted to use any string, kendama strings are designed for durability and flexibility. They’re usually made from strong synthetic materials that can handle repeated tricks and tugs. Using a string not intended for kendamas could lead to fraying or breakage. For the best experience, it’s a good idea to stick with strings made specifically for kendamas, which are available in a variety of colors and lengths.

How often you swap out your kendama string depends on how much you play and the types of tricks you do. If you notice fraying, knots that won’t come out, or the string feels weak, it’s probably time for a replacement. Some players change their strings every few weeks, while others go longer. Regularly checking your string can help prevent unexpected breaks during play and keep your kendama in top shape.

Yes, kendama strings come in a wide range of colors and even multicolor options. Choosing a bright or contrasting color can make it easier to see the string during tricks, which is especially helpful for learning new moves. Packs with multiple colors are also available, so you can switch things up or match your kendama’s style. It’s a fun way to personalize your kendama and keep your setup fresh.
