Choosing the right hex socket bit size depends on the fastener you're working with. Check the bolt or screw head for size markings, or use a caliper to measure across the flats. Most sets include both SAE (inch) and metric (mm) sizes, so match your bit to the fastener for a secure fit.

• Using the correct size helps prevent stripping or damaging the fastener.
• If you're unsure, start with a smaller bit and work up until you find the one that fits snugly.

Having a set with a range of sizes can make projects much easier.

SAE and metric refer to two different measurement systems for hex socket bits.

• SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) sizes are measured in inches and are common in the United States.
• Metric sizes are measured in millimeters and are widely used internationally.

It's important to match your bit to the fastener's measurement system for a proper fit. Many sets include both types, so you can tackle a variety of projects without worrying about compatibility.

Many hex socket bits are designed to be used with hand tools, but some can be used with power drills or drivers if they have the right shank.

• Check if your bit has a compatible end for your drill or driver.
• Using a power tool can speed up tasks, but always use the correct speed and torque settings to avoid damaging the bit or fastener.

Refer to your tool and bit instructions for safe use, and wear appropriate safety gear when working with power tools.

To help prevent rust on your hex socket bits,

• Store them in a dry place, ideally in a case or organizer.
• Wipe them down after use to remove moisture or debris.
• Occasionally apply a light coat of machine oil to the metal surfaces.

These steps can help extend the life of your tools, especially if you work in humid environments or use them outdoors. Regular maintenance keeps your bits ready for your next project.

Extra long hex socket bits can be helpful when you need to reach fasteners in deep or hard-to-access spots.

• The added length gives you more reach, making it easier to work around obstacles.
• However, longer bits may flex slightly under heavy torque, so use them carefully for high-torque applications.

Consider the space and the amount of force needed for your project when choosing between standard and extra long bits.
