A heavy duty code reader helps you diagnose issues with trucks, commercial vehicles, and cars by reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the vehicle's onboard computer. These tools can:

• Access engine, transmission, ABS, and other system data
• Show live sensor readings to help spot problems
• Support advanced functions like DPF regeneration and reset for diesel vehicles
• Work with both 12V and 24V systems, covering a wide range of vehicles

Using a code reader can save time by identifying issues before heading to a mechanic.

To check if a code reader is compatible with your truck, look for these details:

• Supported vehicle types (like heavy duty trucks, commercial vehicles, or cars)
• Voltage compatibility (12V for cars, 24V for most trucks)
• Supported protocols (such as OBD2, HDOBD, SAE-J1939/J1708)
• Connector types (6, 9, or 16 pin)

Always review the product description and your truck’s manual. If you’re unsure, ask a Walmart associate or consult the manufacturer’s website for more info.

Many heavy duty code readers are designed to work with both trucks and cars, but it depends on the model. Some scanners support 12V car systems and 24V truck systems, while others are specialized for one type. Features like DPF regeneration or advanced resets may only be available for trucks. Always check the product details to see if it covers all your vehicles before purchasing.

When choosing a code reader, consider these features based on your needs:

• Full system diagnostics (engine, transmission, ABS, etc.)
• Live data and freeze frame capabilities
• Special functions like DPF regeneration, oil reset, or ECU coding
• Compatibility with your vehicle’s make and model
• Ease of use, such as a clear display or Bluetooth connectivity
• Lifetime free updates for ongoing support

These features can help you get the most value and flexibility from your code reader.

For safe use of a heavy duty code reader:

1. Turn off your vehicle before connecting the scanner to the diagnostic port.
2. Follow the instructions in the user manual for your specific tool.
3. Only perform advanced functions (like DPF regeneration) if you’re familiar with them, as improper use could affect your vehicle’s systems.
4. Keep the code reader’s software updated for best results.

If you’re unsure about a function, it’s always a good idea to consult a professional mechanic or reach out to the manufacturer’s support team.
