On this page, “handball” refers to balls used for popular playground and rec games. You’ll generally see two styles:

• Small, high-bounce rubber handballs: Palm-size balls used for wall handball, stickball, and quick reflex games.
• Inflatable playground balls: Typically 5–11 inches (8.5-inch is common) for four square, dodgeball, kickball, and handball-style play.

To pick the right one, check size, material (rubber, foam, or soft fabric), and whether a hand pump is included. Many sets are designed for kids and adults and work indoors and outdoors. Product pages on Walmart.com list dimensions and what’s included, which can help you match a ball to your game and playing surface.

The best size depends on the game and who’s playing:

• Palm-size high-bounce handballs: Great for wall handball or stickball and quick reaction play.
• About 5-inch playground balls: Easier for younger kids to grip and toss.
• 7–9-inch balls (8.5-inch is a classic): Versatile for four square, dodgeball, kickball, and handball.
• 10–11-inch playground balls: Softer feel and visibility for larger groups and gentler play.

Consider hand size, bounce preference, and playing area. Product pages list exact diameters and recommended uses, which can guide your choice. If you rotate between multiple games, a mixed-size set can offer flexibility for both kids and adults.

Inflation levels can vary by ball, so checking the item’s instructions is a good first step. As a general guide:

• Inflate until firm with slight give: Press a thumb into the surface; it should compress a bit, not feel rock-hard.
• Watch the seams and shape: Avoid over-inflation that strains seams or warps the ball.
• Use a moistened inflation needle: This can help protect the valve.
• Adjust for conditions: Heat can increase internal pressure, so recheck bounce and feel.

For indoor play or younger kids, slightly softer inflation can reduce bounce and speed. Pumps and replacement needles are available on Walmart.com, and product pages typically note if a pump is included.

Choosing the right material and setup can help protect floors:

• Pick indoor-friendly options: Foam-coated or soft fabric/fleece balls are typically gentler on surfaces than textured rubber.
• Go smaller and lower bounce: Smaller balls or slightly softer inflation can reduce impact and marks.
• Prep the space: Clear breakables, use gym mats if available, and designate a play zone.
• Wipe before play: Dirt or grit on the ball can cause scuffs; a quick clean can help.

Product descriptions often indicate indoor/outdoor suitability and materials. Testing in a small area first is a practical way to gauge how a ball behaves on your specific flooring.

Basic care can help extend a ball’s life:

• Rubber/PVC balls: Wipe with mild soap and water using a soft cloth, then air-dry. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasives.
• Foam or fabric-covered balls: Spot clean with a damp cloth; avoid soaking to help maintain shape.
• Storage: Keep balls in a cool, dry place away from direct sun or high heat. A mesh bag can promote airflow. For long-term storage, slightly reducing pressure may help.

Always check the product page for any care notes specific to that ball. Replacement pumps and needles are available on Walmart.com if you need to top off or adjust inflation after storage.
