Storing fruit properly can help keep it fresh and tasty for longer. Here are some general tips:

• Use dedicated fruit storage containers: These often have removable colanders that help drain excess moisture.
• Keep berries and cut fruit in the fridge: Airtight containers can help reduce spoilage.
• Let some fruits breathe: Bananas and whole apples do well on the counter, away from direct sunlight.
• Wash right before eating: Washing fruit before storage can speed up spoilage, so wait until you’re ready to eat.

Adjust your storage method based on the type of fruit for the best results.

Certain fruits release natural gases that can cause others to ripen or spoil faster. For example:

• Keep apples and bananas separate from berries and leafy greens. Apples and bananas give off ethylene gas, which can make other produce spoil quicker.
• Store strong ethylene producers apart: Avocados, peaches, and tomatoes also release ethylene, so keep them away from sensitive fruits like grapes or strawberries.

Using separate containers or fridge bins can help extend the freshness of your produce.

It depends on the type of fruit. Most berries, grapes, and cut fruits stay fresher in the fridge, especially when stored in airtight containers. On the other hand, bananas, whole melons, and citrus fruits can be kept on the counter until they’re ripe. Once ripe, you can move them to the fridge to slow down spoilage. Using produce containers with colanders can help manage moisture and keep fruit fresher, whether in the fridge or on the counter.

Yes, some fruits are best kept out of the fridge until they ripen. These include:

• Bananas: Refrigeration can darken their skins and affect texture.
• Whole melons: Store on the counter until cut, then refrigerate.
• Stone fruits (like peaches and plums): Let them ripen at room temperature first.

Once these fruits are ripe or cut, you can transfer them to the fridge in a storage container to help them last a bit longer.

Keeping your fruit storage containers clean helps prevent odors and mold. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Disassemble any removable parts, like colanders or lids.
2. Wash each piece with warm, soapy water or place them in the dishwasher if they’re dishwasher-safe.
3. Rinse thoroughly and let all parts air dry before reassembling.

Regular cleaning helps keep your containers fresh and your fruit tasting its best.
