Grip strength can vary a lot based on age, gender, and fitness level. On a dynamometer, many adults see readings between 70 and 120 lbs as average, while athletes or those who train regularly might score higher. Some devices measure up to 200 lbs or more. It's best to compare your results to published norms for your age group or track your own progress over time. If you’re using grip strength for fitness or rehab, focus on steady improvement rather than hitting a specific number.

Grip strength typically peaks in early adulthood and may gradually decrease with age.

• Teens and young adults often have higher readings.
• Middle-aged adults may see a slight decline.
• Older adults might notice lower numbers, which is normal.

A 200 lb grip strength reading is generally considered very strong for most people. Most adults score well below this number, so reaching 200 lbs often reflects significant training or natural strength. However, results can vary based on the dynamometer model and your technique. Remember, it’s more important to track your own progress and use the device safely than to compare with others.

Grip dynamometers are often used to track hand strength during recovery from certain injuries or surgeries.

• They can help you and your care team monitor progress.
• Some people use them as part of a rehab program, but always follow professional guidance.

To get accurate results with a hand dynamometer:

1. Adjust the handle to fit your hand comfortably.
2. Stand or sit with your arm at your side and elbow bent at 90 degrees.
3. Squeeze the handle as hard as you can for a few seconds.
4. Record the reading and repeat if needed, resting between tries.
