Choosing the right drill depends on the types of projects you plan to tackle. For light tasks like hanging pictures or assembling furniture, a compact cordless drill is usually enough. For heavier jobs like drilling into masonry or thick wood, look for a drill with higher voltage and multiple speed settings. Consider features like adjustable clutch, keyless chuck, and included accessories. If you’re unsure, check the product details and customer reviews on Walmart.com to see what other shoppers have used for similar projects.

Drills are designed mainly for making holes in various materials, while drivers are built to drive screws and fasteners. Many cordless tools combine both functions, letting you switch between drilling and driving with a simple adjustment. If you plan to do both tasks, look for a model with variable speed and torque settings. This versatility can make your DIY projects much easier and more efficient.

The battery life of a cordless drill can vary based on the battery’s capacity (measured in amp-hours), how often you use the drill, and the type of work you’re doing.

• Light tasks may allow a battery to last several hours.
• Heavy-duty drilling or driving can drain the battery faster.

Many cordless drills can handle light metal or masonry work, but it’s important to use the correct drill bits and settings.

• For metal, use high-speed steel or cobalt bits and a slower speed.
• For masonry, use a masonry bit and, if available, a hammer function.

Proper storage helps extend the life of your drill.

• Keep the drill and battery in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
• Store it in its case or a tool bag to protect it from dust and impacts.
• Remove the battery if you won’t be using the drill for a while, and recharge it every few months to maintain battery health.
