Straight rulers and T-squares are both popular drafting tools, but they serve different purposes. A straight ruler is a simple, flat tool used for drawing straight lines and measuring distances. It’s versatile and works well for general tasks. A T-square, on the other hand, has a crosspiece at one end, allowing you to align it with the edge of a drawing board for perfectly horizontal or vertical lines. T-squares are especially helpful for technical drawings and architectural plans. Choosing between them depends on the type of projects you’re working on.

Choosing the right drafting ruler depends on your specific needs.

• For technical drawings, consider a ruler with both metric and imperial measurements for flexibility.
• For architecture or engineering, a triangular scale ruler can help with precise scaling.
• If you need to draw curves, a flexible curve ruler is ideal for creating custom shapes.
• For sewing or pattern making, look for a contour or curve rule.

Absolutely! Drafting rulers aren’t just for technical drawings—they’re also handy for crafts and sewing projects.

• Straight rulers help with cutting fabric or paper in straight lines.
• Flexible curve rulers are great for tracing patterns or creating smooth curves in dressmaking.
• Contour rulers can help you replicate shapes or measure curves on various materials.

Keeping your drafting ruler clean helps maintain accuracy.

• Wipe it gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and pencil marks.
• Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can damage markings or finishes.
• For metal rulers, dry them thoroughly to prevent any moisture buildup.
• Store rulers flat or in a protective case to avoid bending or scratches.

Yes, there are specialized rulers designed for drawing curves.

• Flexible curve rulers can be bent into various shapes, making them perfect for custom curves in drafting, pattern making, or art projects.
• Contour rulers are also useful for replicating existing curves or transferring shapes.
