Choosing the right size piling cap is all about matching the cap to your dock's piling diameter. Measure the top of your piling across the widest point to get the correct diameter. Most piling caps are sized in inches, so be sure to select a cap that matches or is just slightly larger than your measurement. If your piling falls between sizes, it's usually better to go up to the next size for a secure fit. Double-check product details for sizing guidance before purchasing.

Flat piling caps have a level top and are often chosen for a clean, simple look. Cone piling caps have a pointed top, which helps shed water and debris more easily, potentially reducing the chance of water pooling and extending the life of your pilings. The choice comes down to your dock’s style and your preference for function or appearance. Both types help protect pilings from weather and wildlife.

Installing a dock piling cap is a straightforward process:

1. Clean the top of the piling to remove dirt and debris.
2. Place the cap over the piling, making sure it fits snugly.
3. Secure the cap using stainless steel nails or screws, if recommended by the manufacturer. Some caps may fit tightly enough without fasteners.

Always follow the instructions included with your piling cap for the best results and to help ensure a long-lasting fit.

To help maintain your piling caps, rinse them regularly with fresh water to remove salt, dirt, and debris. For tougher spots, use a mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive tools, as these can damage the cap’s surface. Inspect your caps periodically for cracks or wear, and replace them as needed to keep your dock protected and looking its best.

Most piling caps are designed to fit a variety of piling materials, including wood and metal. The key is to measure the diameter of your piling and choose a cap that matches. If your pilings have unique shapes or features, check the product details to make sure the cap will fit properly. Using piling caps on both wood and metal can help protect against weathering and extend the life of your dock structure.
