A dive flag is a safety signal used on the water to show that divers are below the surface. When you see a dive flag, it means people are swimming or diving nearby, and boats should keep a safe distance and slow down. The classic red flag with a white diagonal stripe is common in the U.S., while the blue and white "Alpha" flag is used internationally. Displaying a dive flag helps everyone stay safe by making divers more visible to boaters and other watercraft in the area.

• Always display a dive flag when divers are in the water to alert nearby boats.
• Keep the flag visible from all directions, usually on a boat or float near the dive site.
• Boats and watercraft should stay a safe distance away—local laws often require at least 100 to 300 feet.
• Divers should stay within a certain range of the flag, typically 50 to 100 feet, depending on regulations.
• Check local and state laws for specific requirements, as rules can vary by location.

Following these guidelines helps protect both divers and boaters.

There are two main types of dive flags used for signaling:

• Red flag with a white diagonal stripe: This is the traditional diver down flag, mostly used in the United States. It signals that divers are in the water nearby.
• Blue and white "Alpha" flag: This flag is recognized internationally and tells other boats that a vessel has limited ability to maneuver because of divers in the water.

Both flags help keep divers safe, but their appearance and usage can depend on local laws and international standards.

The traditional dive flag is bright red with a single white diagonal stripe running from the top left to the bottom right. It's designed to be highly visible on the water, making it easy for boaters to spot from a distance. This flag is usually made from durable materials like nylon or polyester and often includes grommets or a stiffening pole for easy attachment to boats or floats. Its bold colors and simple design help alert others that divers are below the surface.

• Check local regulations, as some areas require a minimum size for visibility.
• Consider where you'll use it—larger flags are easier to see from a distance, which is important for boat traffic.
• Look for flags with reinforced edges or stiffeners if you'll be in windy or rough conditions.
• Think about portability—a smaller flag might be easier to carry if you're shore diving or snorkeling.

Choosing the right size helps ensure safety and compliance with local laws while making your dive more enjoyable.
