Using a darning egg makes mending sock holes much easier. Here’s how you can use it:

1. Slip the darning egg inside the sock, positioning it under the hole to create a firm, rounded surface.
2. Gently stretch the fabric over the egg so the hole is centered and taut.
3. Use a needle and thread or yarn to weave stitches across the hole, working in one direction, then weaving perpendicular to create a patch.
4. Once finished, remove the egg and smooth out the repair.

This tool helps keep your stitches even and prevents accidentally sewing the sock closed.

Darning eggs are versatile and can be used with a variety of fabrics. They’re especially helpful for:

• Cotton socks and towels
• Wool sweaters and scarves
• Blended fabrics found in everyday clothing

Choose a thread or yarn that closely matches the original material. Thicker yarns work well for wool, while finer threads are best for cotton. Always test your chosen thread on a small area to ensure it blends well and doesn’t damage the fabric.

Absolutely! Darning eggs aren’t just for socks. You can use them to mend:

• Gloves and mittens
• Sweaters and cardigans
• Hats and even some pants or shirts

The rounded surface helps you repair holes or worn spots on curved or hard-to-reach areas. Just make sure the opening of the garment fits over the egg for best results.

Keeping your wooden darning egg in good shape is simple:

• Wipe it with a dry or slightly damp cloth after use to remove lint or thread residue.
• Avoid soaking it in water, as this can cause the wood to warp or crack.
• If the surface feels rough, gently sand it with fine-grit sandpaper and apply a small amount of mineral oil to keep it smooth.

Proper care helps your darning egg last for years and keeps your sewing projects snag-free.

When choosing a darning egg, consider these features:

• Material: Most are made from smooth wood, which is gentle on fabrics and comfortable to hold.
• Size: Pick a size that fits easily inside the items you plan to mend, like socks or gloves.
• Surface: A glossy, snag-free finish helps prevent catching threads while you sew.
• Grip: Some eggs have ergonomic shapes for easier handling during longer projects.
