For cross stitch, most crafters use embroidery floss, which is a smooth, six-strand thread made from cotton, polyester, or silk. You can separate the strands to adjust thickness for your project. Cotton floss is popular for its softness and color variety, while specialty threads like metallic or glow-in-the-dark can add unique effects. When choosing thread, look for options labeled specifically for cross stitch or embroidery to ensure the best results. Walmart offers a wide selection of colors and types, so you can find what fits your style and project needs.

Cross stitch thread and embroidery thread are often the same thing—both usually refer to embroidery floss. This floss is commonly used for cross stitch, hand embroidery, and other needlework. However, some specialty embroidery threads, like metallic or pearl cotton, may have different textures or thicknesses. For most cross stitch projects, standard six-strand embroidery floss works well. If you're unsure, check the project instructions or packaging to see what type of thread is recommended for your design.

The thread used for cross stitching is typically called embroidery floss or cross stitch thread. It's a versatile, six-strand thread that can be separated to suit your project's needs. Most cross stitch patterns recommend using 2 strands of embroidery floss for standard fabric (like 14-count Aida), but this can vary. Some projects call for 1 strand for finer detail or 3 strands for a bolder look. Always check your pattern instructions for the suggested number of strands. If you're experimenting, try stitching a small section with different strand counts to see what look you prefer before starting your full project.

Yes, you can use metallic or glow-in-the-dark threads to add special effects to your cross stitch projects. These threads can highlight certain areas or create unique designs. Keep in mind that specialty threads may feel different to stitch with—they can be a bit more slippery or textured than standard cotton floss. For best results, use shorter lengths and thread conditioners if needed. Always follow the care instructions for specialty threads to keep your finished piece looking great.
