A corkscrew is a handy tool designed to help you open bottles sealed with corks, most commonly wine bottles. It typically features a pointed metal spiral, called a worm, which you twist into the cork. Once it's secure, you use the handle or levers to gently pull the cork out of the bottle. Some corkscrews also include extra features like bottle openers or foil cutters, making them versatile for different types of bottles and occasions.

Yes, corkscrews are sometimes called by other names depending on their design or use. Common alternatives include "wine opener," "bottle opener," or "waiter's friend." Some types, like "winged corkscrew" or "lever corkscrew," refer to the specific style or mechanism. If you're shopping, you might also see terms like "wine key" or "screw pull," but they all serve the same main purpose—removing corks from bottles.

People who collect corkscrews are known as "helixophiles." Collecting corkscrews can be a fun hobby, especially since there are so many unique designs and historical pieces out there. Some collectors focus on vintage or rare models, while others enjoy finding modern or novelty versions. If you’re interested in starting a collection, look for different styles and materials to add variety to your set.

The easiest corkscrew style often depends on your personal preference and how much effort you want to use.

• Winged corkscrews are popular because their levers make removing corks simple and require less strength.
• Electric corkscrews are great for effortless opening—just press a button and let the tool do the work.
• Lever corkscrews offer good control and are user-friendly, especially for beginners.

To keep your corkscrew in good shape, clean it after each use.

1. Wipe the worm and any metal parts with a damp cloth to remove wine residue.
2. If needed, use mild dish soap and warm water, but avoid soaking wooden or mechanical parts.
3. Dry thoroughly to prevent rust or buildup.
