Choosing a compass for school depends on your needs and grade level. If you're just starting out, look for a basic geometry compass with a sturdy build and easy-to-use locking mechanism. For advanced math or drafting, consider a metal compass with adjustable arms and extra leads.

• Check if the compass comes with a pencil or lead refills.
• Look for sets that include protractors and rulers for added value.
• Consider portability and storage options, like a case or tin.

Exploring these features can help you find a compass that fits your classroom requirements and lasts through the school year.

Many compasses available at Walmart are designed for both geometry and practical applications like woodworking.

• Look for compasses labeled as 'woodworking' or 'marking gauge'—these often have larger arms and can scribe bigger circles.
• Metal construction and locking mechanisms are helpful for precision.
• Some models include pencil holders or adjustable points for different materials.

While geometry compasses work for basic marking, specialized woodworking compasses offer greater accuracy and durability for carpentry tasks.

Keeping your compass clean helps it last longer and work smoothly.

• Wipe metal parts with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and pencil residue.
• If needed, use a slightly damp cloth for tougher marks, but avoid soaking or submerging the tool.
• For moving parts, a tiny drop of household oil can help maintain smooth operation—just be sure to wipe away any excess.

Always store your compass in a case or box to protect it from moisture and damage.

Many compass sets at Walmart include extra leads, pencils, and accessories like protractors or storage cases.

• Check product descriptions for details about included items.
• Some sets are designed for bulk classroom use and may offer multiple refills and tools.
• Having extra leads and accessories makes it easier to keep your compass ready for use and reduces downtime during projects.

If you need replacements, you can often find compatible refills in the school supplies section.

To draw larger circles, look for compasses with extended arms or adjustable features.

• Some compasses are specifically designed for woodworking or engineering and can scribe circles up to 12 inches or more.
• Attach a longer pencil or use a compass with a ruler attachment for additional reach.
• Always secure the center point firmly to prevent slipping.

If you need to draw circles beyond your compass’s maximum size, consider using a string and pencil as a simple alternative.
