Cat3 and Cat6 cables are both used for networking, but they serve different purposes.

• Cat3 cables are typically used for telephone lines and older network setups, supporting speeds up to 10 Mbps.
• Cat6 cables are designed for modern Ethernet networks, offering much higher speeds (up to 10 Gbps) and improved performance for gaming, streaming, and office use.

If you’re setting up a new network or need faster data transfer, Cat6 is usually the better choice. For basic phone connections or legacy systems, Cat3 may be suitable.

Cat3 cables can technically be used for internet connections, but they’re limited to lower speeds and older technologies.

• They’re best suited for telephone lines or basic networking.
• If you want reliable, high-speed internet for streaming, gaming, or multiple devices, consider upgrading to Cat5e, Cat6, or higher.

Using Cat3 for modern internet setups may result in slower speeds and less stable connections. It’s a good idea to check your devices and network requirements before deciding.

Choosing the right cable length depends on your setup and where your devices are located.

• Measure the distance between your router, modem, or network devices.
• Add a little extra length for flexibility and routing around furniture or walls.
• Longer cables can help reach distant rooms, but avoid excessive slack to keep things tidy.

If you’re unsure, it’s better to go slightly longer than too short. Walmart offers a range of cable lengths to fit different needs.

Not all Cat3 cables are designed for outdoor environments.

• Look for cables labeled as weatherproof, UV resistant, or waterproof if you plan to run them outside.
• Standard indoor cables may degrade or fail when exposed to moisture and sunlight.

Always check the product description for outdoor suitability, and consider protective conduit if you’re installing cables outdoors for extra safety and durability.

To extend a Cat3 cable for a phone line, you’ll need a compatible extension cable and connectors.

• Choose an extension cable with matching connectors (such as RJ11 or RJ12).
• Plug the male end into your existing cable and the female end into your device.
• Make sure the extension is rated for your intended use and length.

This setup can help you move your phone or network device to a more convenient spot without compromising signal quality.
