A graduation cap topper is a removable decoration that sits on the flat square of your mortarboard to showcase your personality, major, or a favorite quote. It’s designed for temporary use and easy removal after the ceremony.

• Formats: Ready-made designs or blanks for DIY customization.
• Materials: Options may include non-PVC plastic, felt, polyester, or lightweight metal.
• Customization: Works with vinyl, rhinestones, paint, or printed methods like sublimation on compatible blanks.
• Size: Many aim to fit standard caps (often around 9×9 inches), though sizes can vary.

It’s a simple way to personalize your look. Just double-check dimensions and any school guidelines before ordering.

You can DIY a topper with a blank insert or craft materials. Here’s a general approach:

1. Measure your cap: Note the square’s side length and the center button position (many caps are around 9×9 inches).
2. Choose a base: Use a compatible blank (e.g., non-PVC plastic) or sturdy cardstock/foam sheet.
3. Design safely: Apply vinyl, paint, rhinestones, or print to a blank insert (sublimation/UV-LED/DTF methods are typically done on blanks, not directly on the cap).
4. Cut the center hole: So the topper sits around the button and the tassel moves freely.
5. Attach gently: Use removable adhesive dots or hook-and-loop tabs for a temporary hold.

Results can vary by materials and cap style, so test fit before the big day.

Fit depends on your cap’s dimensions and the topper’s design. A few quick checks can help:

• Measure your mortarboard: Confirm the square’s side length and where the center button sits. Many are about 9×9 inches, but not all.
• Review product details: Look for exact measurements and whether there’s a pre-cut center hole.
• Check compatibility notes: Some toppers are described for standard bachelor caps; others are sized as DIY blanks.
• Plan attachment: If using adhesive tabs, a bit of adjustability can help with minor size differences.

When in doubt, compare your measurements to the listing specs and consider a blank you can trim for a precise fit.

Most cap toppers are designed for temporary, non-damaging attachment. Common methods include:

• Center-hole placement: A cutout aligns around the button so the topper lays flat.
• Removable adhesives: Low-tack double-sided dots or tape provide a light hold.
• Hook-and-loop tabs: Small circles/strips allow easier removal after the ceremony.

For best results, lightly clean and dry the cap surface, align the hole, and press the topper gently to secure. Avoid permanent glues that may stain fabric or make removal difficult. Ensure the tassel can move freely and nothing obstructs visibility. Attachment strength can vary by material and cap texture, so a quick test fit is advisable.

Great question—graduation listings can include a few different “toppers”:

• Cap toppers: Larger panels that cover the square mortarboard for personalization.
• Tassel toppers/charms: Small pieces that snap onto or decorate the tassel itself.
• Party toppers: Mini graduation-cap picks for cakes, cupcakes, or bottles—these are decor, not wearable.

To tell which it is, check the product size and photos. Wearable cap toppers usually list dimensions in inches and reference the center button. Tassel pieces are small and lightweight. Party toppers are tiny and noted for desserts or table displays. Choose the style that matches how you plan to celebrate.
