A bone folder tool is a must-have for anyone working with paper crafts, bookbinding, or origami. It's designed to help you:

• Crease and fold paper with clean, sharp lines, making your projects look neat and professional.
• Score paper or cardstock before folding, which helps prevent cracks or uneven edges.
• Burnish surfaces—that means smoothing down glued areas or flattening folds for a polished finish.

Whether you're making cards, scrapbooks, or hand-bound books, a bone folder tool can make your crafting process easier and your results more precise.

If you don't have a bone folder handy, there are a few household items you can try as substitutes:

• A clean ruler—great for scoring straight lines.
• The back of a spoon—works for creasing and burnishing paper edges.
• A plastic gift card—useful for folding and smoothing paper.

Just keep in mind, these alternatives might not give you the same control or smooth finish as a dedicated bone folder tool. For frequent crafting or bookbinding, investing in a proper tool can make a noticeable difference.

Traditionally, bone folders were crafted from animal bone, which gave them a smooth, durable finish. Today, you'll find bone folders made from several materials:

• Genuine bone—still available and valued for their sturdiness.
• Plastic—lightweight and affordable, suitable for most paper crafts.
• Teflon—non-stick and resistant to marking delicate papers.

Each material has its own feel and benefits, so you can choose what works best for your projects and preferences.

Using a bone folder is simple, but a few tips can help you get the best results:

1. Align your paper where you want the crease or fold.
2. Score the line by gently running the bone folder along a ruler edge before folding, especially with thicker paper.
3. Fold the paper along the scored line, then press down with the flat side of the tool to sharpen the crease.
4. Burnish glued areas by rubbing the tool over the surface to smooth out bubbles or wrinkles.

Always use gentle pressure to avoid tearing or marking your paper.

Choosing the right bone folder depends on your crafting needs. Here are a few things to consider:

• Material—bone, plastic, or Teflon each offer different textures and durability.
• Shape and size—some are pointed for detail work, others are rounded for broader creases.
• Comfort—look for a tool that feels good in your hand, especially if you'll use it often.
• Intended use—if you work with delicate papers, a Teflon folder can help prevent marks.

Exploring different styles can help you find the tool that fits your projects best.
