An aviation plotter is a handy tool pilots use to measure distances and angles on aeronautical charts. It helps with flight planning by allowing you to draw straight lines, calculate headings, and estimate distances between waypoints. Most plotters feature scales for different chart types and include protractor markings for accurate navigation. Using a plotter can make route planning more precise and efficient, especially when preparing for cross-country flights or training exercises. It’s a staple in pilot gear for both students and experienced aviators.

• Lay your plotter flat on the sectional chart.
• Align the straight edge with your planned flight path.
• Use the scale markings to measure the distance between points.
• Rotate the plotter to match the chart’s north, then use the protractor to find your heading.

Plotters are designed to make these steps easy, helping you quickly check distances and directions. With practice, you’ll find it’s a reliable tool for accurate flight planning and navigation.

The term 'plotter' comes from its main function—plotting courses and measurements on maps or charts. In aviation, a plotter helps pilots mark routes, measure distances, and determine headings. The name reflects its role in mapping out flight paths visually and accurately. Whether you’re training or preparing for a flight, the plotter’s job is to help you plot information directly onto your navigation chart.

Yes, there are several types of aviation plotters, each designed for specific tasks. Common types include:

• Fixed plotters: Used for straightforward distance and heading measurements.
• Rotating plotters: Feature a movable protractor for easier angle calculations.
• Circular slide rule plotters: Often combined with flight computers for advanced calculations.

Choosing the right type depends on your needs, whether you’re a student pilot or planning complex routes.

Absolutely! Aviation plotters are essential tools in flight training. They help student pilots learn how to plan routes, measure distances, and calculate headings on sectional charts. Many flight schools require students to use plotters during navigation exercises and exams. Using a plotter builds confidence in chart reading and prepares you for real-world flying scenarios.
