Squirrel baffles are designed to make it much harder for squirrels to reach bird feeders or bird houses. When installed correctly, they can help deter squirrels by creating a physical barrier that’s difficult for them to climb or bypass. However, results can vary depending on the baffle’s size, shape, and placement. For best results, make sure the baffle is mounted high enough and away from jumping points like trees or fences. While no solution is completely foolproof, baffles can significantly reduce squirrel access and help protect your feeders.

Choosing the right size squirrel baffle depends on your feeder setup and the type of pole or post you’re using.

• For most standard bird feeder poles, a baffle between 15 and 20 inches in diameter is a common choice.
• If you have a larger post or want extra protection, consider a wider baffle.
• Make sure the baffle is wide enough to prevent squirrels from reaching around it and is compatible with your pole’s diameter.

The "5 7 9 rule" is a helpful guideline for placing squirrel baffles and bird feeders. It suggests:

1. Mount the baffle at least 5 feet above the ground,
2. Keep the feeder at least 7 feet away from any jumping-off points (like trees or fences),
3. And use a baffle that’s at least 9 inches wide.

It’s possible to create a homemade squirrel baffle using materials like metal or sturdy plastic, but keep in mind that store-bought baffles are often designed for durability and weather resistance. If you decide to make your own, ensure it’s wide enough and securely attached to your pole or post. Safety tip: Avoid using materials that could harm wildlife or become sharp over time. For convenience and peace of mind, many customers prefer ready-made options available at Walmart.

Installing a squirrel baffle is usually straightforward.

• First, choose a spot on your pole that’s at least 4 to 5 feet above the ground.
• Open or slide the baffle onto the pole, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Secure it tightly so it can’t be pushed up or down by animals.
• Make sure there are no nearby objects that squirrels could use to jump over the baffle.
