Taffy and toffee are actually quite different, even though their names sound similar. Taffy is a soft, chewy candy made by stretching and pulling a sugar mixture until it’s light and fluffy. It often comes in fruity or sweet flavors and is popular as salt water taffy. Toffee, on the other hand, is a harder, brittle candy made by caramelizing sugar with butter. It usually has a rich, buttery taste and a crunchy texture. So, while both are classic candies, their ingredients, texture, and taste set them apart.

In the United States, the word "taffy" is commonly used to describe this chewy, stretchy candy. Americans often refer to the classic version as salt water taffy, especially when talking about the colorful, individually wrapped pieces found at beachside shops and candy stores. While the term "taffy" is widely recognized across the country, you might see different names for specific types or flavors, but "taffy" remains the go-to term in the U.S.

Salt water taffy is a specific type of taffy, but not all taffy is salt water taffy. Salt water taffy is famous for its soft, chewy texture and variety of flavors. Despite the name, it doesn’t actually contain seawater—just a bit of salt and water in the recipe. Other types of taffy may have different ingredients or flavors, but the main difference is that salt water taffy is associated with seaside boardwalks and its unique preparation style.

Taffy is a type of chewy candy made by boiling sugar, butter, or oil, and flavorings, then stretching and pulling the mixture until it becomes light and soft. The process gives taffy its signature texture and allows it to hold a variety of flavors and colors. It’s usually cut into bite-sized pieces and individually wrapped, making it a popular treat for parties, gifts, or just a sweet snack.

To keep your taffy soft and chewy, it’s best to store it in an airtight container at room temperature.

• Avoid exposing taffy to heat or direct sunlight, as it can melt or become sticky.
• If you live in a humid area, consider adding a small food-safe desiccant packet to the container to help prevent moisture buildup.
• For longer-term storage, individually wrapped taffy can be placed in the freezer, but let it come to room temperature before enjoying for the best texture.
