this is the first hot plate I've found that actually heats up like a range burner. I've tried several, cast iron plate, infrared, standard coil, none of them could boil water. I have celiac's and am on a cross country road trip. I found out one of the places I'm staying has no cooktop for me to make safe foods. I quickly ordered this thing to use in my hotel room and it has been a life saver. I do need to have the heat up high but it has cooked my chicken and veggies dinners with no problem. For this price, I would highly recommend. Does the job and isn't heavy or bulky for travel.
