What a terrible novel!...
What a terrible novel! Hannah obviously did no research and completely misrepresents France, let alone France during the war. Names, customs, even food and decors are all wrong, making her book an insipid and ridiculous story which mocks events at the time. Furthermore, it is obviously plagiarized from [La bicyclette bleue]: although the novels end in very different ways, the beginning and characters are suspiciously similar. I rarely give novels so few stars but it is so superficial and weak that there is no other way to rate it. it's sole redeeming point is the writing: had she taken care to do her research and set out a proper plot, Hannah could have created a lovely engaging book.

Beautifully read by Po...

Beautifully read by Polly Stone. Achingly gripping historical nobel that pulls you in and doesn't let you go, even at the very end---and a very special end it is. It's hard to stop thinking about the descriptions Hannah brought forth---too frighteningly realistic, and yes, how easy similar things can happen.

I really liked this book. The two main characters were wonderful and you were really pulling for them to survive. Vivid descriptions of life in France after the Germans invaded and you felt you were going through all the misery of the war with these characters. Eventhough you know that at least one of the sisters survived, you want to know the story of how and why.

Im not sure what I wa...

I'm not sure what I was expecting but those expectations were far exceeded by the read. Ms. Hannah has given us a well researched book with vivid characters, a page-turning plot, and a lasting impression of the existence of the essential good in human beings. While there is evil a plenty, there is also love, hope, and forgiveness to salve the wounds of betrayal, despair, neglect and all the hardships of war. This one is definitely going to be on my Top Ten list for 2015. If you enjoyed All the Light We cannot See you will definitely want to read this one. This is definitely Kristin's best in a long line of good novels.

A book really has to i...

A book really has to impact me to give it 5 stars. This one did! A compelling novel about the activities of two sisters in France during WWII. The story gives a very descriptive, touching account of what the war was like for "women" and what they did to resist and survive. Powerful ending...left me with awe for the courage and stamina of the characters making me wonder what I would have had the strength to do in their place. Yes, Kleenex is needed.
