The Gee Bee Super Sportster was designed by a company located in Springfield, Massachusetts called the Granville Brothers. The term "Gee Bee" is simply a nickname for Granville Brothers. Two models were produced following the Model Z, the aircraft that won a Thompson Trophy the precious year. These were the R-1 and its sister, the R-2, both of which were developed to participate in air racing. The Gee Bee aircraft is known for its unique design. While other aircraft sport a slim fuselage, this racing plane has a clunky fuselage. Granville, one of the chief designers of the Super Sportster, claimed that this prevented excess drag. The pilot's cockpit is located at the far end of the plane, giving its pilot better vision.
