  • Trumpeter/vocalist Tex Allen has a decent voice, but it is far more effective as an afterthought or contrast than a focal point. His insistence on taking three lead vocals out of seven songs prevents his debut album from being a standout release. His trumpet work is above average; Allen has good range, a bright sound, fine control and vigor. He is ably supported on three tracks by piercing alto sax from Jessie Davis, and his rhythm section is good, if not particularly original. But Allen's singing becomes tedious in large doses and brings down the session's energy level. Otherwise, this is a good debut for a trumpeter who will hopefully place more emphasis in the future on his playing and less on his singing. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi
