The problem with coated wire racks is that silverware and other small things fall through the spaces and end up in the sink. This rack has a solid bottom with small drain holes. Nothing will fall through. Since the sides and bottom are solid, there is a little less room than in a traditional coated wire rack but I still like this better. The material is plastic, with silicone on the collapsible sides I only use one or two of the cutlery spaces, and then put champagne flutes in other cutlery spots. The color is white with charcoal gray on the collapsible sides. I don't plan to collapse mine, but just leave it in place, but others might prefer to collapse it for storage.
