Uberleben FIREKIT | Essential Fire Starting Kit

Why did I buy two Firekits? Glad you asked. Recent experience taught me that the particular alloy of the Uberleben Fire Starter rods is superior. So I bought two big ones; a Fatty and a long Hex. When the new Firestarter rods got here and I inspected and tested them, I was astonished by the performance and was driven to get more Uberleben gear. Prior experience taught me that opening the kind of overlapping, full-circumference, friction fit lids that most such kits use can be very difficult, and darn near impossible to open if the box or lid is dented. Especially with wet or numb, shivering hands. The Uberleben kit is not only ingeniously equipped with the very highest quality and mission correct components, it comes in a slide top box that will be a breeze to pry apart if the box is damaged before fire is badly needed. As a Christmas gift for my grandson, a Firekit was simply the perfect option. Could save his life some day. And while I was ordering, it seemed foolish to fail to buy another kit for myself. I really like this kit for many reasons and see this kit used in a couple of ways; one, it can be a standalone, lightweight kit. Two, it can be used as a backup to or in a layered approach to fire-making in support of a more robust fire-making set up (lighters, etc). I myself use this kit as a backup to my main kit, but also a drop in my pocket kit for day hikes away from camp, when I am not lugging my whole pack around. I can put this in my pocket and carry water and snacks and be set all day for whatever may come my way. I did modify this kit by adding a few things to suit my personal wants. I added six shortened typhoon matches and strike pad, three zippo easy spark tinders, and several inches of cut up and shredded Blackbeard fire starter. All the above listed items are overpacked in individual small ziploc bags, and I've also wrapped the included tindar wick and bellow in a small baggie. Then the overall kit is wrapped closed with a loop of double sided velcro and overpacked in a baggie. This is done to facilitate a level of water and sweat resistance. The tin is packed to the max, but it's got what I want and the lid still closes fine haha. I've been testing this in the backyard and its been working great. It will definitely be in my cargo pocket on my next hike. Uberleben has a winner on their hands here and I hope this becomes a staple in their lineup.
