First off this is a low pile rug. However it's still very soft to the touch. The area is exactly as measured 5x8'. The instructions mention that it is also machine washable which is a huge plus because since it's white I expect it to get dirty over time. Overall I'm very satisfied with it and it looks great in my living room.
